Topic: Why plant use energy

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain why plants need energy and how they get it.

Materials

• Images of plants and animals
• Diagrams of a plant and an animal
• Drawing materials (e.g. paper, pencils, crayons)
• Handouts with information about plants and animals and their energy needs

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen a plant or an animal.
• Ask them to describe what the plant or animal looked like and how it behaved.
• Explain that plants and animals need energy to survive.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that all living things need energy to survive.
• Energy comes in different forms, such as heat, light, and chemical energy.
• All living things use energy to grow, move, and stay alive.
• Energy is also needed for all the processes that take place inside a living thing, such as breathing, thinking, and eating.

Guided Practice

• Ask students to think of a plant they have at home or in their classroom.
• Ask them to think about how the plant gets its energy and how it uses the energy it gets.
• Have students share their ideas with the class.

Independent Practice

• Have students research a plant that uses a different method of transportation than vascular tissue.
• Have them draw a picture of the plant's transportation system and label the parts.
• Have them write a short paragraph explaining how the plant uses its transportation system to get energy.

Closure

• Review the different ways that plants get energy and the importance of each method.
• Ask students to share their drawings and paragraphs with the class.

Assessment

• Observe students during the guided practice activity and conference with them one-on-one to assess their understanding of the concepts.
• Collect and review the paragraphs and drawings created during the independent practice activity to assess student understanding.
