Topic: Sexual Reproduction in Animals

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand how animals reproduce sexually and the different stages involved in the process.

Materials

• Computers or tablets with internet access
• Handout with information on sexual reproduction in animals

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen animals have babies.
• Ask them to share their experiences and what they saw the animals do.
• Ask them if they know how animals have babies.
• Ask for a show of hands if they know that animals reproduce sexually.

Direct Instruction

• Begin by explaining that animals have babies in different ways, but the most common way is through sexual reproduction.
• Explain that sexual reproduction means that an animal's sex cells, or gametes, join together to create a new organism.
• Discuss the different types of sexual reproduction, including mating, fertilization, and implantation.
• Use diagrams and models to help illustrate the process.
• Emphasize the importance of sexual reproduction in maintaining the diversity of life on Earth.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a model of a male and a female animal.
• Ask the students to imagine that they are the animals and have just mated.
• Have the students make a list of the actions that the male and female take to ensure successful fertilization.
• Bring the class back together and have a class discussion about the different actions that were listed by the groups.
