Free 5th Grade Senses, Food And Drinks Lesson Plan (Science)

Topic: Assessing food and drinks using the senses

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the sense organs responsible for assessing food and drinks and describe how they are used.

Materials

  • Examples of different types of food and drinks (e.g. fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, drinks)
  • Flashcards with pictures of the sense organs (nose, eyes, ears, mouth, skin)
  • Pen and paper for each student

Warm-up

  • Ask students to close their eyes and think of a time when they experienced a smell they enjoyed. Have them share their experiences with the class.
  • Next, ask them to think of a time when they experienced a taste they enjoyed. Again, have them share their experiences with the class.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of the five senses, and explain that taste and smell are two of the most important senses when it comes to evaluating food and drinks.
  • Show pictures of different types of food and drinks and have students identify what they see. Then, have them take a sniff of each item and try to identify the smells.
  • Have students taste a small portion of each food or drink, and have them discuss what they taste and how it feels in their mouth.

Guided Practice:

  • Give students a food or drink item and have them work in pairs to evaluate it using their senses.
  • Have them write down their observations and thoughts about the item.

Independent Practice:

  • Have students create a poster or presentation about a food or drink item that they consider to be unique or interesting.
  • They should use the information they gathered during the guided practice to explain why they think the item is unique or interesting and how they assessed it using their senses.

Closure:

  • Have students share their posters or presentations with the class.
  • Discuss as a class any interesting or unique food or drink items that were presented.
  • Review the five senses and how they are used to assess the characteristics of food and drinks.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the sorting activity and listen to their discussions to assess their understanding of the five senses and how they are used to assess food and drinks.
  • Evaluate students' posters or presentations on the characteristics of their chosen food or drink item and their use of the five senses to support their assessments.
