Plants Need Lesson Plan for 5th Grade Example Students

Topic: Plants need

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to list at least 3 basic needs that plants need to survive.

Materials

  • Pictures or real plants of various types (e.g. flowers, trees, grass)
  • Chart paper or whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask the students if they have ever seen a plant before.
  • Ask them to name the different types of plants they know.
  • Ask the students if they know what plants need to survive.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that plants need water, oxygen, and light to survive.
  • Show the students pictures of different types of plants and explain how each type of plant needs a different combination of water, oxygen, and light to thrive.
  • Ask the students to think about how the different types of plants might be different in their environment and how this might affect their needs.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and give each group a different type of plant.
  • Have the students observe their plant and take notes on how it is behaving (e.g. does it seem dry? does it seem tired? etc.).
  • Have the students compare their observations with the other students in their group and come up with a hypothesis about why the plant is behaving in that way.
  • Have the students present their hypotheses to the class and discuss possible reasons why the plant is behaving in that way.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students choose one type of plant to research (e.g. a cactus, a fern, a rose, etc.).
  • Have the students create a poster or presentation on their chosen plant, including information on its habitat, roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, and any other interesting facts they may have found.

Closure

  • Have the students share their posters or presentations with the class.
  • Review the main points of the lesson, including the different parts of a plant and the different ways that plants need to survive.
  • Ask the students to think about how they can protect plants in their own communities (e.g. Pick up trash, don't spray pesticides, etc.).

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the plant propagation and plant diversity activities to assess their understanding of the different parts of a plant and their ability to identify and categorize different types of plants.
  • Evaluate the posters or presentations produced during the independent practice to assess the students' understanding of the different ways that plants need to survive.
