Free 5th Grade Human Skeletal And Muscular Systems Lesson Plan (Science)

Topic: Human Skeletal and Muscular Systems

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and describe the various parts of the human skeletal and muscular systems.

Materials

  • Human skeleton model or diagram
  • Pictures of different muscles
  • Pen and paper for each student

Warm-Up

  • Have students stand up and stretch for a few minutes to get their bodies ready to learn about the human skeletal and muscular systems.
  • Ask students if they know what the human skeletal and muscular systems are and what they do. Write their answers on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students the human skeleton model and explain that this is the framework of the human skeletal system.
  • Point out the various bones and their names, and explain their functions. For example, the skull protects the brain and the jaw holds teeth.
  • Demonstrate how the muscles move the bones by pulling on the muscle model. Explain how the different muscles in the body have different functions, such as moving the limbs or maintaining posture.
  • Show students the human muscular model and explain that this is the framework of the human muscular system.
  • Point out the various muscles and their names, and explain their functions. For example, the biceps flex the elbow and the quadriceps extend the knee.
  • Have students take out their worksheets and pencils. Review the names and functions of the bones and muscles using the human skeleton and muscular models as a visual aid.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of toy bones and a set of toy muscles.
  • Have the groups work together to create a model of a human skeleton, using the bones and muscles.
  • As they work, circulate around the room and provide assistance and guidance as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work individually or in pairs to create a more detailed model of a human skeleton, using paper, scissors, and glue.
  • Encourage students to use their knowledge of the characteristics and functions of the bones to choose the appropriate bones for their model.

Closure

  • Have students share their skeletons with the class and discuss any additional details they added to their models.
  • Review the main points of the lesson, emphasizing the characteristics and functions of the different bones in the human skeleton.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and listen to their presentations to assess their understanding of the human skeletal and muscular systems.
  • Collect and grade the skeletons and presentations as a formative assessment of student understanding.
  • Administer a quiz at a later date to assess retention of the material.
