Topic: Harry Potter and the Phenomena of Magic

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain the magical phenomena in the Harry Potter series using the 5E model.

Materials

• Copies of Harry Potter books
• Classroom whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have seen or read Harry Potter.
• Discuss how some characters in the series can perform magical acts.
• Ask students if they know how these magical acts are performed.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of magical phenomena and how it is used in the Harry Potter series.
• Discuss how magic is not real and how it is used as a plot device in the series.
• Show examples of magical phenomena from the series, such as the Patronus charm and Lumos spell.
• Discuss how these phenomena are tied to the NGSS standards for fifth grade.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in small groups to create a Harry Potter-themed magic spell of their own.
• Have each group present their spell to the class and discuss how it relates to the NGSS standards.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one of the nine NGSS standards to focus on for their project. They should choose a specific Harry Potter-related example that illustrates that standard, and create a presentation or demonstration to illustrate their point. This could be a simple poster or a more involved presentation using a computer or a projector.

Closure

• Have each group present their project to the class. Encourage students to ask questions and discuss the examples presented.

Assessment:

• Observe students during the guided and independent practice to assess their understanding of the concept.
• Collect and review the projects to assess students' ability to apply the concept in a real-world context.
