Exploring Ecosystems Lesson Plan for 5th Grade Example Students

Topic: Exploring Ecosystems

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and describe different ecosystems and the key features and organisms found in each.

Materials

  • Images of different ecosystems (e.g. aquatic, terrestrial, arctic, tropical)
  • Handout with definitions and descriptions of ecosystems
  • Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think about the different ecosystems they have encountered in their lives, and write down a few examples on the board.
  • Discuss the examples as a class and ask students to describe the different ecosystems they listed and what made them unique.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of ecosystems and explain that they are natural systems made up of interdependent organisms and their environment.
  • Use textbooks or online resources to give a brief overview of the different ecosystems, their characteristics, and the organisms that live in them.
  • Ask students to take notes on the information provided.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a handout with information on a particular ecosystem.
  • Ask students to read over the information and think about how the characteristics of the ecosystem influence the types of organisms that live in it.
  • Have students consider examples of organisms they can think of that belong to the given ecosystem and write them down on a separate piece of paper.
  • Bring the class back together and have each group share their examples and thoughts on the ecosystem.

Independent Practice

  • Ask students to choose one ecosystem that they are particularly interested in and want to learn more about.
  • Have them research information on this ecosystem online or in books, and create a project that shows what they have learned.
  • Projects can be as simple as a presentation or poster, or as complex as a simulation or model.

Closure

  • Have students share their projects with the class.
  • Review the main points of the lesson, and ask students to summarize what they have learned about the ecosystems they have studied.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their understanding of the material.
  • Collect and grade the projects as a form of assessment.
  • Ask students to reflect on their learning and explain what they found most and least interesting about the ecosystems they studied.
