Topic: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the steps of the engineering design process.
• Students will be able to apply the engineering design process to create a solution to the challenge presented in the story.

Materials:

• Copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
• Pencils
• Paper
• Access to a computer or other device with a web browser

Warm-Up

• Have students work in pairs to create a list of challenges they might face in the wizarding world, such as fighting a dragon or escaping from a trap.
• After a few minutes, have a few pairs share their challenges with the class.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of the engineering design process, explaining that it is a set of steps that engineers use to solve problems.
• Use the handouts to review the steps of the engineering design process: ask, imagine, plan, test, reflect.
• Use the Harry Potter-related challenge created by the warm-up activity as an example of how to use the engineering design process.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in small groups to brainstorm ideas for a Harry Potter-related engineering design challenge.
• Encourage them to ask questions and imagine what they might create.
• Once they have brainstormed ideas, have them sit down and begin to plan out their design using the engineering design process.

• Have students work individually or in small groups to complete their Harry Potter-related engineering design challenge.
• Encourage them to use the engineering design process and to test their design properly.
• Have them present their design to the class and explain how it works.

Closure

• Review the steps of the engineering design process and the importance of testing a design before implementing it.
• Ask students to share any interesting insights or discoveries that came up while working on their Harry Potter-related engineering design challenge.

Assessment

• Observe students during the engineering design process and conduct a group or individual assessment to ensure that all students are implementing the steps of the engineering design process and that all students are creating a Harry Potter-inspired engineering challenge.
• Students can be assessed on the basis of their ability to implement the engineering design process and create a Harry Potter-inspired engineering challenge.
