Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to define the rule of law and explain its importance.

Materials

• Whiteboard or chalkboard
• Markers or chalk
• Handouts or worksheets with definitions and examples of the rule of law (provided below)

Warm-up

• Ask students what they know about the law.
• Write their answers on the whiteboard or chalkboard.
• Ask students if they know what the rule of law is.
• Write their answers on the whiteboard or chalkboard.
• Ask students if they can explain what the rule of law means and why it is important.

Direct Instruction

• Write the definition of the rule of law on the whiteboard or chalkboard: "The rule of law means that people must obey the laws that are in place and that those laws must be fair and apply equally to everyone."
• Explain that the rule of law is important because it helps to keep society safe and orderly and it gives people a sense of justice and fairness.
• Ask students if they can give any examples of laws that are in place in their country. Write their answers on the whiteboard or chalkboard.

Guided Practice:

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a copy of a law from the country in which they live.
• Have the groups discuss the law and ask questions such as: What is the purpose of the law? Who is it meant to apply to? How is it fair?
• After a few minutes, bring the groups back together and have them share their thoughts and insights on the law.
• Write down the key takeaways on the whiteboard or chalkboard.

Independent Practice:

• Have students choose a law from a different country than the one in which they live.
• Research the law and create a poster or presentation that describes the law, its purpose, who it is meant to apply to, and how it is fair.
• Share the poster or presentation with the class.
