5th Grade Phonation And Resonaton Lesson Plan

Topic: Phonation and Resonaton

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Understand the anatomy of the vocal cords and how they function.
  • Become aware of the full body's role in vocal production.

Materials

  • Images of the anatomy of the vocal cords
  • Body awareness exercises (e.g. standing tall, bending and stretching)

Warm-up

  • Have students do some simple body awareness exercises to get them focused on their bodies. Examples could be standing tall, bending and stretching, etc.
  • Ask students to speak as loudly as they can without yelling. Then, have them speak as quietly as they can without whispering. This will help them get a sense of the range of their voice.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of phonation and resonance. Explain that the vocal cords are the instrument through which we create sound when we speak.
  • Demonstrate proper breathing technique. Ask students to watch you as you inhale and then exhale. Explain that we need to breathe properly in order to use our vocal cords properly.
  • Show students how to properly place their tongue and lips. Demonstrate how to create different sounds and how they affect the resonance in the head and body.

Guided Practice

  • Pass out chart paper and markers to each student. Have them chart the different sounds you demonstrate and the effect it has on the body.
  • Have students work in pairs to demonstrate proper breathing and tongue/lip placement. Have a partner assess and provide feedback.

Independent Practice

  • Have students create a short skit or presentation that demonstrates proper breathing, tongue/lip placement, and vocal cord function.
  • Encourage students to be creative and use their own words to demonstrate the concepts you have taught.

Closure

  • Review the key concepts of phonation and resonance and have students share one thing they learned during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to ensure they are demonstrating proper vocal technique.
  • Collect and review students' posters or performances to assess their understanding of and ability to demonstrate vocal technique.
