Topic: Understanding numbers up to 100

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand the concept of whole numbers and how they are used in counting, addition, and subtraction.

Materials

  • Physical objects (e.g. fruit, toys) for counting
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Worksheets with practice problems

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they can name any numbers. Write their answers on the board.
  • Ask students if they can count to any number. Write their answers on the board.
  • Ask students to explain the meaning of each number they give.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students the cards with numbers on them and ask them to identify each number.
  • Ask students to count up to 100 with you, using the physical objects or mental counting method.
  • Have students practice saying the numbers up to 100 out loud.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs and take turns saying the numbers up to 100 to each other.
  • Encourage students to use the counting method if needed.

Independent Practice

  • Have students create a 100 chart by drawing 100 dots on a piece of paper and labeling each dot with a number from 1-100.
  • Have students use the 100 chart to practice saying the numbers up to 100 to each other.

Closure

  • Review the concept of counting to 100 and being able to name each number between 1-100.
  • Have students share any new strategies they learned for counting to 100.
  • Encourage students to continue practicing their counting and number naming skills at home.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to assess their ability to accurately count to 100 and name the corresponding number.
  • Have students turn in their completed counting charts as a form of assessment.
