Free Understanding Decimal Place Value Lesson Plan for 5th Grade Students

Topic: Understanding Decimal Place Value

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and write decimal numbers up to thousandths using place value.
  • Students will be able to understand the relationship between the digit before or after the decimal point and the value of the decimal place.

Materials

  • Decimal charts or manipulatives for practice with place value
  • Handouts with examples of decimal place values
  • Video clips or interactive online presentations on decimal place value

Warm-up

  • Review the concept of place value by asking students to identify the value of the digits in a number. For example, in the number 38,029, how do we know the 8 is in the thousands place and the 3 is in the hundreds place?

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of decimal place value, explaining that decimal place value is 1/10 the value of the digit before or after.
  • Use examples to demonstrate how decimal place value works. For example, show how the value of a digit changes as it moves to the right in a decimal number.
  • Explain the importance of decimal place value in calculating the value of a number. For example, if we have the number 382.29, how do we know if it's closer to 3 or to 83? Decimal place value helps us to know that it's closer to 3 because the 2 is in the hundreds place, and 3 is less than 100.

Guided Practice

  • Give students a few examples of decimal numbers and have them identify the place value of each digit.
  • Have students work in pairs to complete a worksheet or activity where they identify the place value of each digit in a decimal number.

Independent Practice

  • Have students create a multiplication table for decimal numbers up to thousandths. They can use the base-10 blocks you used in the introduction to represent the numbers. They can use this table to quickly multiply decimal numbers.
  • Have students create a game, such as cards or a board game, where players have to quickly multiply two decimal numbers. They can use their multiplication table to do this.

Closure

  • Review the concept of decimal place value and how it is related to tenths and hundredths.
  • Ask students to share something they learned or found interesting during today's lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice and give them a quiz on decimal place value to assess their understanding.
  • Have students write a short reflection on what they learned today and how they can apply the concept of decimal place value in their daily life.
