Topic: Board games

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain the rules and strategies for three different board games: checkers, tic-tac-toe, and Connect Four.

Materials

• Board games: checkers, tic-tac-toe, Connect Four
• Handouts with instructions and strategies for each game

Warm-up

• Review the different parts of a board game (board, pieces, rules, etc.).
• Ask students to share any experiences they've had with board games.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of probability and explain why it's important in board games.
• Demonstrate how to use dice to determine random numbers.
• Show how to use a probability chart to determine the likelihood of certain outcomes in a board game.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a set of dice and a probability chart.
• Have the groups work together to play a game of chance, using the dice and probability chart to determine their moves.
• Have each group share their strategy and explain how they used the probability chart.

Independent Practice

• Have students create their own game of chance using multiple dice.
• Encourage students to use their knowledge of probability to create a strategy for their game.
• Have students create a diagram or illustration to illustrate their strategy.

Closure

• Review the importance of understanding probability in games of chance.
• Have students share their strategies for their games of chance with the class.
• Encourage students to apply their understanding of probability to real-world situations.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice activity to assess their understanding of the concepts covered in the lesson.
• Evaluate the group presentations for their use of proper terminology and their application of probability to a real-world situation.
