Topic: Rounding Decimals

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Eliminate the need to use exact decimal numbers in daily life by understanding how to round decimal numbers.

Materials

  • Decimal numbers from 0.00 to 0.99
  • Rounding rule chart (see example below)

Warm-Up

  • Show students a decimal number, such as 0.35, and ask them to read it aloud, including the decimal point.
  • Ask them to explain what a decimal number is and what the decimal point does.
  • Ask them to think of a situation in which they might need to use a decimal number, such as when measuring money or weight.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the rounding rules, using the chart as a reference.
  • Review the concept of rounding up and rounding down, and explain why these rules are used.
  • Demonstrate how to use the rounding rules to round decimal numbers to the nearest ten or hundred.

Guided Practice

  • Give students a few examples of decimal numbers and have them round the numbers using the rounding rules.
  • Have them work with a partner to check their work and make sure they are rounding correctly.

Independent Practice

  • Provide students with a worksheet of decimal numbers to round.
  • Have them work independently to round the numbers on the worksheet using the rounding rules.

Closure

  • Have students share their work with the class, discussing how they determined which digits to round and how they did so.
  • Review the rounding rules and emphasize the importance of having a strategy for rounding decimals.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of rounding rules and their reasoning for choosing which digits to round.
  • Collect and review the completed worksheets to assess students' understanding of rounding rules and their ability to apply them in practice.
