Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the concept of drawing inferences from line graphs.

Materials

• Line graphs
• Data points represented on the line graph
• Pencils and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Ask the students to look at the line graph provided and answer the following questions:
• What do you see on the line graph?
• What do the different lines represent?
• How are the lines different from each other?
• Ask for volunteers to share their answers with the class.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the term "inferencing" and explain that it is the process of drawing conclusions based on the data presented in a graph.
• Have the students look at the line graph again and ask them to identify the different features, such as the labels, axes, and lines.
• Have the students identify the values on the axes and compare them to each other.
• Ask the students to identify any patterns in the data, such as whether the lines are rising or falling, and whether they are increasing or decreasing.
• Have the students make predictions based on the data they see.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a copies of the line graph and the data table.
• Have the students work together to draw a conclusion based on the data they see, using the skills they learned in the direct instruction.
