Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to convert a decimal to a hundredth and thousandth and vice versa.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handouts with examples of decimals to 100 and 1000
  • Calculator (optional)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think of a number between 0 and 100.
  • Have them write the number on a piece of paper and draw a circle around it.
  • Ask them to split the number into a hundred parts by drawing a line after every hundredth.
  • Ask them to count the number of lines they drew and write the number on the bottom of the page.
  • Ask them to write the number they drew in hundredths on the top of the page.
  • Ask them to add the number they wrote on the top of the page and the number they wrote on the bottom of the page.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to students that a decimal is a way of writing a fraction as a number.
  • Show students an example of a decimal by writing a fraction such as 1/2 as a number.
  • Have students identify the digits in the number (1, 2).
  • Have students identify the decimal point by drawing a line after the digit to the left of the fraction (1, 2).
  • Have students identify the hundredths by drawing a line after every hundredth (1.2).
  • Have students identify the hundredths by counting the number of lines they drew (2).
  • Have students add the number they wrote on the top of the page and the number they wrote on the bottom of the page.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs.
  • Give each pair a set of fraction cards.
  • Have students sort the fraction cards into equal sets, one set for the top of the page and one set for the bottom of the page.
  • Have students use the fraction cards to create a decimal number on their own paper.
  • Have students check their work with a partner, making sure they have a decimal number with the correct digits in the hundredths place.

Independent Practice

  • Give students a worksheet with multiple problems requiring them to convert a decimal number to a hundredths and thousandths place.
  • Have students work through the problems on their own, writing out their answers and checking their work with a partner.

Closure

  • Review the importance of being able to convert between decimal and fractional numbers.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the practice and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the material.
  • Collect and review their work on the independent practice activity to assess their ability to apply their understanding of converting between decimal and fractional numbers to real-world situations.
