Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to say and write numbers with decimals to the hundredth place.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Handouts with examples of numbers written with decimals to the hundredth place

Warm-up

• Review what is meant by decimal place and how to write numbers with decimals to the tenth place.
• Ask students to give examples of numbers with decimals to the tenth place.
• Write the examples on the board and discuss.

Direct Instruction

• Review the names of the digits 0-9.
• Introduce the concept of decimal place.
• Explain that decimals are used to express fractions of a unit.
• Write the number 100 as a decimal using the decimal point.
• Write the number 100 as a decimal without using the decimal point.
• Explain the difference between these two ways of writing the number 100 as a decimal.
• Ask students to give examples of numbers with decimals to the hundredth place.
• Write the examples on the board and discuss.

Guided Practice

• Give each student a set of cards with numbers written as decimals to the hundredth place.
• Have students work in pairs to put the numbers in order from least to greatest.
• Have a few pairs share their ordered numbers with the class and discuss.

Independent Practice

• Have students use the cards to create their own number sequences.
• Encourage students to use their understanding of place value to keep their sequences accurate and meaningful.
• Have students present their number sequences to the class and explain the meanings behind their sequences.
