Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

  • Personal travel stories from the students
  • Pictures from the students' travels
  • Handouts with quotes about the importance of traveling

Warm-up

  • Ask the students to share their recent travel experiences, such as a trip they took with their family or a vacation they went on alone.
  • Ask the students to share their favorite part of the trip and why they enjoyed it.
  • Ask the students to share any difficulties they encountered on their trip and how they overcame them.

Direct Instruction

  • Ask the students to brainstorm a list of countries and territories they would like to visit someday.
  • Ask the students to share their reasons for choosing these specific destinations.
  • Ask the students to brainstorm a list of things they would like to see and do while traveling abroad.
  • Ask the students to share any concerns they have about traveling to these destinations, such as safety concerns, language barriers, or cultural differences.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in small groups to create a travel itinerary for one of the destinations they brainstormed. Encourage the students to include as many of the things they would like to see and do as possible.
  • Have the students present their travel itineraries to the class and discuss any differences or similarities in their choices.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students choose one of the destinations they brainstormed to be the focus of a project. They can choose to write a report, create a presentation, or draw a map of the area, for example. Encourage the students to include as much detail about the destination as possible, including any things they would like to see and do there.

Closure

  • Have the students share their projects with the class. Ask them to describe the destination and what they plan to do there.
  • Remind the students that traveling can be a fun and educational experience, as long as they are careful and aware of their surroundings.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during their independent practice and give them feedback on their travel plans.
  • Ask the students to reflect on their own experiences and what they learned from traveling.
