Topic: Using Text Evidence to Support an Argument

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to use text evidence to support their arguments in an extended writing task.

Materials:

• Printed texts
• Writing prompts
• Writing paper
• Pencils

Warm-up

• Ask students to share examples of texts that they have read that have made them think differently about a topic.
• Have students share what evidence from the text helped them reach their conclusions.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of text evidence and explain that it is any piece of information in a text that helps us to understand the author's ideas and intentions.
• Provide examples of different types of evidence, such as quotes, statistics, and details.
• Have students work in pairs to identify and underline examples of text evidence in a short passage.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to discuss the examples of text evidence they found and explain why each one is an example of text evidence.
• Encourage students to use evidence from the text to support their explanations.

Independent Practice

• Give students a series of passages to analyze and identify the text evidence in each passage.
• Have students write a short paragraph for each passage explaining how the text evidence contributes to their understanding of the passage.

Closure

• As a class, review the importance of using text evidence to support our interpretations of a text.
• Ask students to share any insights or understanding they gained from using text evidence in their analysis of the passages.
• Encourage students to continue practicing this skill as they continue their reading and writing activities throughout the school year.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to assess their ability to use text evidence to support their analysis of a passage.
• Evaluate the independent practice projects for evidence of students' ability to use text evidence to support their interpretation of a text.
