Free Model U.N Lesson Plan for 5th Grade Students

Topic: Model U.N: Cooperation between countries

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the importance of cooperation between countries and how it can promote peace and prosperity.

Materials

  • Copies of the United Nations Charter for each student
  • Handouts with examples of different types of cooperation between countries (e.g. trade, environmental protection, disaster relief)
  • Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of different countries they know.
  • Ask students to share their lists and talk about the different kinds of countries they mentioned (e.g. developed vs. developing, large vs. small, rich vs. poor).
  • Explain that countries can sometimes work together to promote peace and prosperity in the world. This is called cooperation between countries.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of model United Nations (UN).
  • Explain that a model UN is a simulation of the real UN, where students represent different countries and work together to discuss and solve global issues.
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of the different UN organs, including the Security Council, the General Assembly, and the various committees.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and assign each group a country to represent.
  • Provide each group with a copy of the agenda for the simulated UN session and any background information for their country.
  • Ask the groups to discuss the issues on the agenda and how their country would respond.
  • Have each group present their ideas to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Ask the students to work on a project-based simulation of the UN, in which they will assume the role of a UN member state and work collaboratively to draft a resolution on a current issue.
  • Provide each student with a blank copy of the resolution form and background information on the topic to be addressed by the resolution.
  • Ask the students to work independently to draft their resolution, taking into account the perspective of their assigned country and the perspectives of the other members.
  • When the students have completed their resolutions, have them work collaboratively to agree on a final version.
  • Have each student present their resolution to the class.

Closure

  • Review the main points covered in the lesson, including the structure and functions of the UN, the role of Security Council members, and the process for drafting and adopting resolutions.
  • Ask the students to reflect on the process of working on their resolutions and the importance of collaboration in achieving common goals.
  • Encourage the students to consider how they can apply the skills and lessons learned in the UN project to their own communities and the world at large.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the group work and presentation skills
  • Evaluate the resolutions written by the students
