Topic: Ancient Greece

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand how democracy was created and influenced the western world.

Materials

• Maps of Greece and the rest of the ancient world
• Images of famous ancient Greek artwork and architecture
• Handouts with information about different Greek cities and regions (such as Athens and Sparta)
• Colored pencils or markers for the art project

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they have heard of democracy or any of the Greek cities mentioned in the lesson.
• Ask the students to share their knowledge and thoughts about these topics.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of Ancient Greece and its contributions to the western world.
• Pass out the Ancient Greece map and have the students identify the different cities and regions.
• Discuss the political and social structure of Ancient Greece, including the roles of the various government officials and the use of a voting system to determine decisions.
• Explain how democracy was created in Ancient Greece and how it influenced the western world.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in small groups to complete a worksheet on the political and social structure of Ancient Greece.
• Walk around the room and assist with any questions or difficulties.

Independent Practice

• Have the students research a famous person from Ancient Greece and create a poster or presentation on their life and accomplishments.
