Topic: Moses the prophet

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the life of the prophet Moses and his leading role in the Israelites' escape from Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land.

Materials

  • Pictures of the Old Testament events or scenes from the life of Moses
  • The Bible
  • Pen and paper for each student

Warm-up

  • Ask the students what they know about the Old Testament and the events that took place there.
  • Ask the students if they have heard of the prophet Moses and what they know about him.
  • Write the word "PASSOVER" on the board and ask the students what they know about it.
  • Ask the students if they know what the Promised Land is and if they can name any of the Israelite tribes.

Direct Instruction

  • Begin by reading aloud the account of the Passover and the Exodus from Egypt from the book of Exodus.
  • As you read, highlight the important events and characters in the story, and ask the students to listen for and remember these details.
  • When you are finished reading, ask the students if they have any questions about what they have just heard.
  • Explain to the students that Moses was the leader of the Israelite people and the one through whom God delivered the Ten Commandments to the people.
  • Tell the students about some of the important events in the life of Moses, such as his being saved from the Nile River by his mother and being sent away from Egypt after killing an Egyptian.
  • Ask the students if they have any questions about the life of Moses.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups, and give each group a copy of the handout with the story of Moses.
  • Have the students read the story together, and ask them to pay attention to the important events and characters in the story.
  • As they read, have the students underline or highlight the important events and characters in the story.
  • After the students have finished reading, have them share their list of underlined or highlighted events and characters with the rest of the class.
  • As a class, discuss the important events and characters that the students identified, and explain any that the students may not have understood.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students choose one event or character from the story of Moses that they found especially interesting or important.
  • Ask each student to draw a picture of this event or character, and write a short sentence describing it.
  • Collect the drawings and sentences and put them up on the board or projector for the class to see.

Closure

  • Review the key events and characters from the story of Moses. Ask the students if there are any questions they still have about the story.
  • Encourage the students to think about how the story of Moses has influenced their own beliefs and views about God and the world.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided and independent practice activities to see if they are able to summarize the key events and characters from the story of Moses.
  • Collect the students' drawings and written reflections as independent practice to see if they are able to express their understanding of the story of Moses.
