Topic: Social structure of ancient Egypt

Objectives & Outcomes

• students will understand the social structure of ancient Egypt by the end of the lesson
• students will be able to describe the different classes of ancient Egyptian society and identify the role of each class in society

Materials

• Diagram of the social structure of ancient Egypt (provided by teacher)
• Handouts with information about the different classes of ancient Egyptian society
• Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

• Ask students to share what they know about the social structure of ancient Egypt. Write their answers on the board.
• Discuss the answers and clarify any misconceptions.

Direct Instruction

• Distribute the handouts with information about the social structure of ancient Egypt.
• Go over the information on the handouts with the class, clarifying any questions.
• Use the pictures of ancient Egyptian society to illustrate the different social strata and their roles and responsibilities.
• Ask students to brainstorm examples of how the different social strata interacted with each other.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into groups of four or five.
• Give each group a piece of paper and a pen or crayon.
• Ask each group to come up with one or two examples of how the different social strata in ancient Egyptian society interacted with each other.
• Have each group share their examples with the class.
