Topic: How life has changed in the last 60 years

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to list at least 3 key ways of life that have changed significantly from 60 years ago to now.
• Students will be able to explain how and why these changes have occurred.

Materials

• Scissors
• Construction paper
• Glue
• Markers or crayons

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they have any grandparents or great-grandparents.
• Ask them what they know about the way of life in the time when their grandparents or great-grandparents were young.
• Discuss as a class how life has changed in the last 60 years.

Direct Instruction

• Show the students pictures or videos of life in the 1950s or 1960s.
• Ask the students to describe what they see in the pictures or videos.
• Discuss as a class the key differences and similarities between the way of life in the 1950s or 1960s and the way of life today.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs or small groups to create a chart comparing and contrasting the way of life in the 1950s or 1960s and the way of life today.
• Have the students present their charts to the class for discussion.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose one aspect of life from the 1950s or 1960s and one aspect of life today. They should research and write a short report on how these two aspects have changed.

Closure

• Have small groups share their reports with the class. Ask the class to think about what these changes mean and how they affect us.
• As a class, discuss the importance of knowing how life has changed over time. Knowing how things have changed can help us understand the world around us better.
