Ancient Egypt Lesson Plan for 5th Grade Students

Topic: Ancient Egypt

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to explain the importance of the river Nile to ancient Egypt and describe Egyptian myths and society.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe the most famous pharons of ancient Egypt and the role of archeology in understanding the past.

Materials

  • Textbook or other learning materials
  • Handouts or worksheets
  • Pictures or images of ancient Egypt

Warm-Up

  • Ask students what they know about ancient Egypt. Write their responses on the board.
  • Ask students if they have ever visited any ancient ruins or archeological sites. What did they see and learn?
  • Lead a discussion about the importance of archeology in understanding the past.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students images or videos of archeological sites and artifacts from ancient Egypt.
  • Discuss the role of the Nile River in the development of Egyptian civilization.
  • Discuss some of the myths and gods of ancient Egypt, and the role they played in society.
  • Introduce some of the famous pharaohs of ancient Egypt, and discuss their reigns and achievements.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a handout with information about a specific pharaoh.
  • Have the groups research their pharaoh and use the information to create a biography that includes details about their reigns, achievements, and contributions to Egyptian society.
  • Have the groups present their biographies to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a specific period or aspect of Egyptian history that interests them and write a short report on it. The report can be written in any format (e.g. -script, -letter, -book review).

Closure

  • Review the key points of the unit and discuss the contributions of ancient Egypt to later civilizations (e.g. -language, -religion, -art, -architecture).
  • Ask students to write a short reflection on what they learned about ancient Egypt and how it relates to their own lives.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to see if they are able to effectively present their research -on a historical figure or event.
  • Collect and grade the presentations, looking for understanding of the topic and use of evidence and -supporting details.
  • Administer a quiz at the end of the unit to assess students' understanding of the key concepts covered.
