Topic: Introduction to Digital Wellness

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to define the terms "posture," "eye strain," and "ergonomics."
  • Students will be able to identify risks for poor posture, eye strain, and ergonomic injuries when using digital devices.

Materials

  • Digital device (optional)
  • Handouts with definitions and illustrations of posture, eye strain, and ergonomics
  • Markers or pens

Warm-up

  • Have students stand up and stretch. Ask them to pay attention to their body and identify any areas of pain or discomfort.
  • After a few minutes, ask students to sit down and observe their posture. Ask them to think about how their body feels in the new position.
  • Finally, have students close their eyes and relax for a few seconds. Then, ask them to describe what they see when they open their eyes.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of digital wellness and explain that it refers to the health and well-being of the body and mind when using digital devices.
  • Discuss the importance of proper posture and ergonomics when using digital devices. Show examples of proper posture and hand/wrist positioning.

  • Discuss the benefits of taking breaks and encourage students to take a break at least every half hour.

Independent Practice

  • Have students create a "digital wellness" poster that illustrates proper posture, hand/wrist positioning, and eye strain prevention.
  • Encourage students to include additional tips for staying healthy and productive while using digital devices.

Closure

  • Have students share their posters with the class.
  • Discuss any additional insights or recommendations that were included on the posters.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the digital break to ensure they are applying the correct posture and not straining their eyes.
  • Collect and review the posters to assess student understanding of the topic.
