Topic: Introduction to Digital Health

Objectives & Outcomes

  • To understand the importance of taking care of one's physical health when using computers and other digital devices
  • To learn basic routines for before, during, and after computer use that promote physical health

Materials

  • Handouts with information on basic routines for before, during, and after computer use that promote physical health (e.g., proper posture, stretching, hydration)
  • Computers or other digital devices for the class to use during the lesson

Warm-up

  • Have the class do simple stretches, such as bending down to touch their toes and stretching their arms over their heads.
  • Ask the class to share any hobbies or activities that require them to use computers or other digital devices (e.g., playing video games, sending messages on a mobile device).
  • Ask the class if they have ever had any problems with their physical health when using computers or other digital devices.
  • Write the following question on the board: "How can we take care of our physical health when using computers and other digital devices?"

Direct Instruction

  • Review the definition of physical health and the importance of maintaining it.
  • Discuss the top three routines for before, during, and after computer use that promote physical health (see handout for examples).
  • Emphasize the importance of following these routines to ensure physical health.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to complete a checklist to assess their current computer habits in each of the three areas (before, during, after).
  • Have them compare their results with their partner and discuss any areas for improvement.

Independent Practice

  • Have students create a poster or presentation to share with the class on the top three digital health routines that they have learned.
  • Encourage them to be creative and include illustrations or graphics to help convey their message.

Closure:

  • Have each group present their poster or presentation to the class.
  • Ask the rest of the class to listen and provide feedback.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback.
  • Evaluate the posters or presentations and provide feedback.
  • Administer a quiz to assess understanding of the importance of digital health and the top routines for health promotion.
