Topic: Comprehension and Production of Explanatory Texts

Objectives & Outcomes

• Identify an explanatory text from a descriptive text.
• Identify the different parts of an explanatory text.
• Distinguish their own words in a parafrase and a citation.

Materials

• Explanatory and descriptive texts
• Pen and paper for writing

Warm-up

• Show the students a few explanatory texts and a few descriptive texts and ask them to identify which is which.
• Ask the students to share what they notice about the texts they have chosen.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the terms "explanatory" and "descriptive" and give examples of each type of text.
• Explain the process of paraphrasing and citing textual sources.
• Model for the students how to identify and name the different parts of a text, including the introduction, body, and conclusion.

Guided Practice

• Provide the students with a sample explanatory text and a sample descriptive text and have them work in small groups to identify the type of each text and identify the different parts.
• Have each group present their findings to the class.

Independent Practice

• Have students work individually or in small groups to create their own explanatory texts. Students should choose a topic of their choice and write about it in an explanatory manner.
• Encourage students to use visual aids (i.e. graphs, charts, maps) to help convey their message.
• Have students present their explanatory texts to the class.

Closure

• Review the key concepts from the lesson, including the differences between explanatory and descriptive texts, and the importance of using precise language in explanatory texts.
• Ask students to share one thing they learned during the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe students during the group or individual activities to verify their understanding of the concepts taught in the lesson.
• Review and correct the written explanations and paraphrases submitted by students.
