Objectives & Outcomes:

  • Students will understand and be able to use the different types of action verbs in sentences.

Materials

  • Sentence strips with action verbs (e.g. run, jump, dance, etc.)
  • Small props for visual examples (e.g. a stuffed toy, an action figure, a piece of fruit, etc.)
  • Pen and paper for writing practice

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think of two different types of action verbs. Write their answers on the board.
  • Ask students to volunteer one of their answers and act out the action verb while the rest of the class guesses what it is.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the list of action verbs with the class, using the flashcards or written list as a reference.
  • Ask students to come up with additional examples of action verbs, and write them on the board.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups to come up with more examples of action verbs, and share their examples with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one of the action verbs they identified in the previous activity and create a short presentation (e.g. a poster, PowerPoint, or Prezi) to demonstrate how they use the verb in their daily lives.

Closure

  • Review the definitions of the six action verbs and ask students to share any new insights they gained about the words.

Assessment

  • Circle the correct verb form in each sentence.
