Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and use proper nouns in their writing.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout with examples of proper nouns (e.g. Jennifer, Chicago, President Obama)
  • Writing prompt (optional)

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they can name some places they have been or know about. Write their responses on the board.
  • Ask students if they can name some people they know or have heard of. Write their responses on the board.
  • Ask students if they can name any proper nouns they know of.

Direct Instruction

  • Define proper nouns as names that uniquely identify a person, place, or thing.
  • Review the list of proper nouns on the board and ask students if they can remember what makes them unique and special.
  • Introduce the list of proper nouns that will be used in the activity and explain their purpose.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of proper noun worksheets.
  • Have students work together to identify the proper nouns on their worksheets and write them down on the corresponding blank lines.
  • Go over the answers as a class and have students explain their reasoning for each identification.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a separate sheet of proper noun worksheets and have them work individually to identify the proper nouns on the worksheets.
  • Encourage students to use context clues and other methods to support their identification of each proper noun.
  • Have students document their identifications on the corresponding blank lines on the worksheets.

  • Ask students to share any challenges they encountered during the independent practice activity and how they were able to overcome them.
