Topic: Expressing personal past events in a time line

Objectives & Outcomes:

• Students will be able to create a time line to express personal past events.

Materials:

• Large piece of paper or whiteboard
• Markers or colored pencils
• Time line template (provided below)

Warm-up

• Have students draw a simple time line, starting with today and ending with their birth day. Ask them to label any important events they can think of.
• Discuss the events with the class and ask if anyone can add any others.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of a time line and explain that it is a way of visualizing past events in order.
• Explain that we use the past simple to talk about past events in a time line.
• Provide examples of personal past events using the past simple and have students repeat after you.
• Emphasize the importance of using the correct tense when creating a time line.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with a list of past events and have them create a time line using the past simple.
• Go over the time line with the class and make sure that all the events are in the correct tense.
• Encourage students to use expressive language when describing their past events.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose two past events from their life and create a timeline using the past simple.
• Encourage students to use expressive language when describing their past events.

Closure

• Review the importance of using expressive language in past tense.
• Have students share any additional past events they would like to add to their timelines.
