Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

  • World map
  • Flashcards with pictures of people and places
  • Pencils and paper for note-taking

Warm-up

  • Begin by asking students if they know what a country is. Ask them to give examples of countries they know.
  • Next, show the class a map of the world and point out the different continents. Ask students to name the continents they know.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the students that a country is a geographical area controlled by a government.
  • Show the class another map of the world and point out the different countries. Ask students to name some countries they know.
  • Explain to the students that people who live in a country are called citizens, and that they may be from different ethnic backgrounds and speak different languages.

Guided Practice

  • Show the class a table with pictures of people from different ethnic backgrounds. Ask students to guess which countries the people are from.
  • Have students work in pairs to search for pictures of famous people from different countries on a website like Google Images. Ask them to identify the country each person is from and write it down.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to create a "Our World" project. They can choose a topic related to the countries in our world and research it using Google Sites or other online resources. They should then create a presentation or poster to share their findings with the class.

Closure

  • Review the key points from the lesson and ask students to share something they learned about the countries in our world.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the group work activity and give feedback on their participation and understanding of the material.
  • Collect and review the projects completed by the independent practice.
