Topic: Healthy habits

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the different food groups on the food guide pyramid and explain the health benefits of each group.
  • Students will be able to plan a balanced meal that incorporates all six food groups.

Materials

  • Food guide pyramid poster or image
  • Handouts with images and descriptions of each food group (vegetables, fruits, grains, protein foods, dairy, and fats)
  • Pencils and paper for students to plan their meals

Warm-up

  • Begin the lesson by asking students what they already know about healthy eating. What are some foods that belong in each food group?
  • As a class, brainstorm a list of healthy foods that belong in each food group. Write the list on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the food guide pyramid and explain that it shows the recommended number of servings from each food group that we should eat each day.
  • Demonstrate how to use the food guide pyramid to plan a healthy meal, starting with the base (bread, cereal, pasta, rice). Add a fruit or vegetable, a protein source, and a dairy item or a healthy fat.
  • Show students the handouts with pictures of different types of foods from each food group and have them identify which group each food belongs to.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a pencil and paper. Take the time to walk around and assist students as they are planning their healthy meals.
  • Have students write down the ingredients for their healthy meal on their paper.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work in their small groups to prepare their healthy meal using the ingredients they have written down on their paper.
  • Encourage students to discuss and collaborate as they are preparing their meal.

Closure

  • Have students share their healthy meals with the class and explain why each ingredient was chosen and how it belongs to one of the six food groups.
  • Review the importance of each food group for a healthy body and discuss what happens if we don't get enough of each group.S:SS
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned about the food guide pyramid during the lesson.
