Disaster Lesson Plan for 5th Grade Students

Topic: NATURAL DISASTER concept for speaking, reading, listening, vocabulary and writing with past tense

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the concept of a natural disaster and be able to use vocabulary related to natural disasters and their aftermath.
  • Students will be able to write a paragraph about a natural disaster using proper structure and vocabulary.

Materials

  • Pictures or videos of natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires)
  • Handouts with vocabulary words and structures related to natural disasters
  • Writing paper and pen/pencil

Warm-Up

  • Have students sit in a circle and play the "Pass the Parcel" game. Have one student hold onto a small, wrapped parcel while the other students ask questions to try and guess what is inside. Once a student guesses correctly, they take the parcel and become the new holder. After a few rounds, reveal the "parcel" as a disaster-related word or phrase and ask students to share their thoughts on the topic.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of natural disasters and their effects on people, property, and the environment.
  • Use pictures and videos to illustrate the different types of natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes, floods, tornadoes).
  • Discuss how natural disasters can be predicted and prevented (e.g. building codes, weather warnings).
  • Read a selection of articles or passages on natural disasters and have students summarize the main points using their own words.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to complete a worksheet or activity on natural disasters.
  • Provide assistance and guidance as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Have students create a poster or presentation on a specific natural disaster (e.g. volcanic eruption, hurricane).
  • Students should include information on the event itself, its impact, and how people responded.
  • Encourage students to use past tense and other grammar structures covered in this lesson.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson and ask students to share their posters or presentations.
  • Ask students to summarize what they have learned about natural disasters and how they affect people.
  • Remind students of the importance of staying informed about natural disasters and how they can help in times of need.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their understanding of natural disasters and their ability to express their thoughts in writing or through a presentation.
  • Use the class posters or presentations as a form of assessment, evaluating students' ability to research and present information about a natural disaster.
