Topic: Proper Nouns in Simple Sentences

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the difference between a proper noun and a common noun and how they can be used in simple sentences.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Examples of proper nouns (e.g. John, Chicago, United States) and common nouns (e.g. man, city, country)
• Handouts with sentences using proper nouns and common nouns

Warm-up

• Ask students if they can think of any names of people, places, or things that they know. Write the names on the whiteboard and label them as proper nouns.
• Ask students if they can think of any words that describe people, places, or things that they know. Write the words on the whiteboard and label them as common nouns.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of proper nouns and common nouns. Explain that proper nouns are names that are unique to a person, place, or thing, and that they are always capitalized. Common nouns are names that can be shared by more than one person, place, or thing, and they are not capitalized.
• Provide examples of proper nouns and common nouns. Ask students to give examples of their own.
• Explain that proper nouns can be used in simple sentences, just like common nouns. Ask students to think of a proper noun and a common noun that they can use in a simple sentence.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs or small groups. Give each group a common noun and a proper noun. Have students create a simple sentence using both the common noun and the proper noun.
• Have students share their sentences with the class and provide feedback and support as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a common noun and a proper noun. Have them create a creative sentence using both nouns.
• Encourage students to be creative and think outside the box.

• Have students share their sentences with the class.
