Free 5th Grade Positive And Negative Impacts Of Computers And Computing Lesson Plan

Topic: The Positive and Negative Impacts of Computer and Computing

Objectives & Outcomes

  • The student will be able to identify, describe, and evaluate the positive and negative impacts of computers and computing in daily life (e.g., downloading videos and audio files, electronic appliances, wireless Internet, mobile computing devices, GPS systems, wearable computing).
  • The student will be able to explain the reasons for the positive and negative impacts of computers and computing.

Materials

  • Computers or other devices with internet access
  • Examples of positive and negative impacts of computers and computing (e.g., videos, audio files, images, articles, etc.)

Warm-up

  • Have the students brainstorm a list of computers and computing devices that they are familiar with.
  • Then, have the students share their list with a partner and discuss the positive and negative impacts of each item on the list.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the students pictures or videos of different types of computing devices and ask them to brainstorm the positive and negative impacts of each item.
  • As a class, discuss the lists and reach a consensus on the overall positive and negative impacts of the various types of computing devices.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs to research and write a short paragraph about one of the computing devices they brainstormed. Encourage them to include both the positive and negative impacts of the device they chose.
  • After they have finished, have them share their paragraphs with the class and discuss any additional impacts they might have missed.

Independent Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and give each group a list of five to ten computing devices that were not discussed in the guided practice activity.
  • Have each group research and write a short paragraph about one of the devices on their list, including both the positive and negative impacts of the device.
  • After they have finished, have the groups present their paragraphs to the class and discuss any additional impacts they might have missed.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson with the students and encourage them to think about how they personally use computing devices and how they can be mindful of the positive and negative impacts they might have.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and give feedback on their presentations. -Assess students' understanding of the positive and negative impacts of computing through a written exit ticket or questionnaire.
