Topic: The Solar System

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand how the solar system works and the roles played by the Sun and the planets in its formation.

Materials

• Diagram of the solar system
• Paperclips
• String
• Marbles or other small objects to represent the planets
• Markers or crayons

Warm-up

• Ask students if they know what the solar system is.
• Give a brief overview of the solar system, noting that it is the collection of planets and other objects that orbit around the Sun.

Direct Instruction

• Show pictures or videos of the different planets, explaining that they are named after ancient Roman and Greek gods and goddesses.
• Explain how the planets orbit around the Sun in different directions and at different speeds.
• Show a model of the solar system, and have students use the stickers to show the location of each planet.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups, and give each group a set of planet stickers.
• Have the students use the stickers to create their own model of the solar system, placing the planets in the correct order and position.
• Have the students present their models to the class, explaining their placement choices.

Independent Practice

• Have the students draw a picture of the solar system, including all the planets and their relative sizes and distances.
• Encourage the students to include as much detail as possible, including the colors and surface features of the planets.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson, including the relative sizes and distances of the planets, and the different characteristics of each planet.
• Ask the students to share one thing they learned about the solar system today.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the sorting and labeling activities to assess their understanding of the relative sizes and distances of the planets.
• Review the students' written answers to the guided practice activity to assess their understanding of the characteristics of each planet.
