Topic vs Main Idea

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the main idea of a text and understand the difference between the main idea and the topic of a text.

Materials

• Short passages or excerpts from books or articles
• Post-it notes or small cards

Warm-Up

• Show students a short passage or excerpt from a book or article and ask them to identify the topic of the passage.
• Ask them to share their ideas with a partner or small group.
• Then, ask them to identify the main idea of the passage.
• Ask them to share their ideas with the class.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of the main idea and the topic.
• Explain that the main idea is the most important idea in a text, and it is the key to understanding the text as a whole.
• The topic is the subject or topic of the text. It is the information that is presented about the main idea.
• Provide examples of main ideas and topics using passages or excerpts from texts.
• Ask students to identify the main idea and the topic of each passage.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with a short text and have them identify the main idea and the topic.
