Topic: Coping with changes in our lives

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and classify different types of changes.
  • Students will be able to identify and practice healthy ways of coping with changes.

Materials

  • Whiteboard
  • Markers
  • Handouts with examples of different types of changes (e.g. seasonal, personal, school-related)

Warm-up

  • Have students take out a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side, have them write down any changes that have happened in their lives over the past year. On the other side, have them write down all the ways they have coped with these changes.
  • After a few minutes, have students share with a partner the changes they listed and the ways they have coped with them.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of change and how it is inevitable in our lives.
  • Discuss the importance of being able to cope with changes in a healthy way.
  • Share the coping skills that will be discussed in the lesson (see below for examples).

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group one of the coping skills to discuss and practice.
  • Have the groups share their experiences and feedback with the class.
  • Highlight the importance of using the skill in a positive and healthy way.
  • Repeat with the other coping skills.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a piece of paper and a pen and have them draw a picture of a situation that represents a change in their life.
  • Have them write a caption below their picture to describe how they are coping with the change.
  • Collect the papers and go through the captions together as a class.

Closure

  • Ask the students to share one thing they learned about coping with change during the lesson.
  • End the lesson by reminding the students that changes are a natural part of life and that they can learn to cope with them.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided practice activity to assess their understanding of the concept of coping with change.
  • Collect the students' written reflections and use them to assess their ability to apply the coping skills they learned during the independent practice activity.
