Topic: The Respiratory System and the Function of Lungs

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand the function of the lungs in the respiratory system and how they breathe in oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

Materials

• Pictures of the respiratory system
• Diagrams of the lungs and respiratory system
• Models of the lungs and respiratory system (optional)
• Pencils and paper for taking notes

Warm-Up

• Ask students if they know how our body breathes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.
• Lead a discussion about how the respiratory system is responsible for breathing, and how the lungs are involved in this process.

Direct Instruction

• Show students the lungs model and explain that these are the organs responsible for breathing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide.
• Explain that the respiratory system is a series of organs that work together to allow breathing to take place.
• Show students the diagram of the respiratory system and explain the function of each organ in the system, including the lungs, the trachea, the bronchi, and the pharynx.
• Discuss the importance of the function of the respiratory system in ensuring proper oxygenation of the blood and removal of carbon dioxide.

Guided Practice:

• Divide the students into small groups and have them identify the organs in the respiratory system from the model and diagram.
• Have each group discuss the function of each organ and how it contributes to the overall function of the respiratory system.
• Have each group share their findings with the class.

Independent Practice:

• Have the students create a poster or presentation to explain the function of the respiratory system and the organs in it.
• Students can include information on how each organ contributes to the overall function of the respiratory system and any other interesting facts they learned during the lesson.

Closure:

• Review the main points of the lesson with the students.
