Topic: The environment

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and describe various objects in their surroundings, and explain how they are important for their health and well-being.

Materials

  • Flashlight
  • Hand mirror
  • Chart paper and markers
  • Various objects such as: flower petals, leaves, grass, trees, pebbles, etc.

Warm-up

  • Ask the students to close their eyes and take a deep breath, focusing on the smells around them.
  • Have the students think of the different smells they might recognize, and write them down on the chart paper.
  • Ask the students to share the smells they wrote down, and discuss how they can tell what objects might have those smells by using their senses of sight, hearing, touch and smell.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the students pictures or illustrations of different objects found in the environment, such as trees, flowers, birds, and insects.
  • Ask the students to identify each object and describe its characteristics, such as its shape, color, and size.
  • Ask the students to share any interesting or unique information they might know about the object, such as its uses or unique features.
  • Have the students work in pairs to read and summarize information from the handouts on each object.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs to draw a picture of one of the objects discussed and label its characteristics.
  • Ask the students to share their drawings with the class and provide feedback and suggestions.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work on a project-based activity where they choose a specific environmental topic to research and create a presentation about it.
  • The students can present their projects to the class and explain what they learned about the topic.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson and discuss any questions the students may still have about the environment.
  • Ask the students to think about how they can take care of the environment and help protect it.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity to see if they are able to understand and explain the importance of protecting the environment.
  • Collect and review the students' posters or presentations to assess their understanding of the topic.
