4th Grade System Lesson Plan Example

Topic: Respiratory system

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the structure and function of the respiratory system and its responsibility for respiration.

Materials

  • Model of the respiratory system (such as a Plastic Man model)
  • Chart paper and markers
  • Card stock and scissors for each student

Warm-up

  • Review the concept of the circulatory system and its role in transporting blood throughout the body.
  • Ask students to share what they know about the respiratory system and respiration.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of the respiratory system and respiration.
  • Use a diagram or model of the respiratory system to show students the components of the system and how they work together to provide oxygen to the body.
  • Explain that the respiratory system includes the lungs, nasal cavity, pharynx, and mouth.
  • Discuss the function of each component of the respiratory system, including:
  • The lungs provide a large surface area for gas exchange, and contain alveoli, which are tiny air sacs where oxygen from the atmosphere is transferred to blood.
  • The nasal cavity and pharynx help to warm and humidify incoming air.
  • The mouth plays a role in both breathing and speech.
  • Ask students to name some examples of activities that require proper functioning of the respiratory system, such as playing sports, singing, and talking.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of cards with labeled images of the components of the respiratory system (lungs, nasal cavity, etc.).
  • Ask students to sort the images into the correct positions on the diagram of the respiratory system.
  • Have students work together to place the images in the correct positions on the diagram.
  • Encourage students to explain their reasoning for each placement.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a sheet of paper with the diagram of the respiratory system torn off the board.
  • Ask students to draw and label the components of the respiratory system on their sheets.
  • Encourage students to use the labeled images as a reference if needed.

Closure

  • Have students share their drawings with the class and explain the labels they chose.
  • Review the main points of the lesson: the organs of the respiratory system and their functions.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the material.
  • Collect and review the drawings created during the independent practice activity to assess students' ability to apply their knowledge of the respiratory system in a creative --way.
