4th Grade States Of Water Lesson Plan Example

Topic: States of Water

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the different states of water and describe the characteristics of each state.

Materials

  • Ice
  • Water
  • Liquid water
  • Vinegar
  • Salt
  • Food coloring
  • Spray bottle
  • Glass container

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever seen water change from one form to another. Prompt them to give examples of water changing forms, such as from liquid to ice or from ice to water.
  • Discuss with students the differences between the different states of water. Ask them to give examples of each state and explain the characteristics of each state.

Direct Instruction

  • Provide a brief overview of the different states of water and their characteristics.
  • Show students pictures or videos of each state of water. Ask them to describe what they see and how it differs from the others.
  • Distribute the handouts with information about each state of water. Have students read the information and discuss as a class the characteristics of each state.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups to complete a worksheet or activity that asks them to identify the different states of water and their characteristics.
  • Go over the answers as a class and discuss any missed questions.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a cup of water and a dropper.
  • Have students carefully drop small amounts of cold water onto a piece of wax paper and observe the patterns that form.
  • Have students record their observations and try to come up with a general rule about the patterns that they observed.

Closure

  • Review the properties of liquids and solids and the different ways that water can exist as a solid or liquid.
  • Ask students to share their observations and general rules from the independent practice activity.
  • Discuss any interesting or unexpected observations and have students explain their general rules.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the different states of water.
  • Collect and review their observations and general rules to assess their understanding of the concept.
