Topic: measuring tools

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and name various measuring tools, including metric and imperial units.

Materials

• Set of measuring tools (metric ruler, imperial ruler, metric caliper, imperial caliper)
• Chart with images and names of the measuring tools
• White board and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever used any measuring tools in their daily life, and ask them to name the tools.
• Write the names of the tools on the white board.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to students that there are many different types of measuring tools that are used to measure different things.
• Show students the different types of measuring tools and have them identify each one.
• Demonstrate how to use each type of measuring tool, using real-life examples if possible.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into pairs and give each pair a set of measuring tools.
• Have students use the measuring tools to measure various objects in the classroom, including themselves if possible.
• Have students use the measuring tools to measure the size of various objects in the classroom.
• Have students use the measuring tools to measure the length, width, and height of various objects in the classroom.

Independent Practice

• Divide students into groups and give each group a task to complete using the measuring tools.
• Have groups use the measuring tools to measure the dimensions of a room, the length of a rug, the height of a window, and so on.
• Have groups use the measuring tools to measure the length, width, and height of an object they are planning to build.

Closure

• Review the proper way to use each measuring tool and have groups share their findings.
• Ask students to share any challenges they faced while using the measuring tools and how they were able to overcome them.

Assessment

• Observe students as they work in groups to measure objects and provide feedback on their use of the measuring tools.
• Collect and review the measurements students take during the independent practice activity.
