Topic: Different types of soil

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to compare and contrast the physical and chemical properties of different types of soil, including clay, sand, and loam.

Materials

• Soil samples from different types of soil (e.g. clay, sand, loam)
• Pieces of paper or Styrofoam cups
• Pencils

Warm-up

• Ask students if they know what soil is and what it is used for. Write their answers on the board.
• Ask students if they have ever played in dirt or mud before. Have them share their experiences.

Direct Instruction

• Distribute the handouts with pictures and descriptions of different types of soil.
• Ask students to look at the pictures and read the descriptions.
• Ask them to identify which soil type is shown in each picture and describe the characteristics of each soil type.
• Discuss the importance of soil in our daily lives, e.g. in agriculture, construction, and landscaping.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups and give each group a piece of chart paper and a pen or marker.
• Ask each group to create a chart showing the characteristics of the different soil types they have studied.
• As a group, discuss and clarify any questions before creating the chart.
• When the charts are complete, have students share their charts with the class and explain their choices.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a piece of paper and a pen or marker.
• Ask students to individually choose one of the soil types they have studied and write a short paragraph describing the -characteristics of that soil type.
• Encourage students to use their notes and the class presentation to help them with their writing.

Closure

• Have students share their paragraphs with the class.
• Discuss the different characteristics of soil as a group.
• Ask students to reflect on what they have learned about soil and how it affects the growth of plants.

Assessment

• Observe students during the experiential activity and the independent practice to assess their understanding of the characteristics of different types of soil.
• Evaluate students' paragraphs for accuracy and completeness of information.
