Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and explain examples of adaptations in animals.

Materials

• Pictures of animals (optional)
• chalkboard or whiteboard
• pencils and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen animals in their everyday life.
• Ask students to name some animals they know.
• Ask students to raise their hand if they know how animals survive in their environment.
• Write their answers on the board (e.g. camouflage, claws, sharp teeth).

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of adaptation and explain that it is the process by which animals adjust to their environment in order to survive.
• Using the examples from the warm-up, demonstrate how animals adapt to their environment by using their unique features and abilities.
• Explain that not all animals have the same abilities, and some animals have to adapt in different ways to survive in their environment.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of animal cards.
• Have the students use the cards to create a collage that illustrates how the animals they chose adapt to their environment.
• Have the students share their collages with the class and explain how the animals they chose adapt to their environment using the examples from the warm-up.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a piece of paper and have them draw a picture of an animal that they have not drawn in the warm-up or collage.
• Have the students write a short paragraph explaining how their animal adapts to its environment.

Closure

• Have the students share their drawings and paragraphs with the class.
• Ask the students to reflect on what they have learned about animal adaptations and how they can help animals survive in their environments.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the guided and independent practice activities to ensure that they are correctly identifying and discussing the different types of animal adaptations.
• Collect the students' drawings and paragraphs and use them to assess their understanding of animal adaptations.
