Free Adaptation In Animals Lesson Plan for 4th Grade Students

Topic: Adaptation in Animals

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the 5Es strategy in the adaptation of animals and apply the 5Es strategy to explain the adaptation in penguin (penguin's feet and body).

Materials

  • Pictures of different animals
  • Handouts with information on penguins
  • Pencils and paper for pair work

Warm-up:

  • Ask students to think about the different animals they have seen.
  • Have them share their ideas and make a list of the animals on the board.
  • Ask students if they have ever wondered how the animals they have seen have adapted to their habitats.

Direct Instruction:

  • Introduce the topic of adaptation in animals.
  • Explain that animals have to adapt to their habitats in order to survive.
  • Use the handout to explain the 5Es of adaptation:
  • Empowerment: Animals adapt in order to gain powers or abilities to live in their habitats.
  • Encapsulation: Animals adapt by changing their bodies to fit into their habitats.
  • Elimination: Animals adapt by getting rid of things that are not suitable for their habitats.
  • Equilibrium: Animals adapt by balancing their needs with the resources available in their habitats.
  • Use the examples on the handout to explain each of the 5Es of adaptation.

Guided Practice:

  • Have students work in pairs to identify and explain examples of adaptation in different animals.
  • Give each pair a set of cards with pictures of different animals.
  • Have them sort the cards into categories based on the 5Es of adaptation.
  • Have them explain their categorization and the examples of adaptation for each category.

Independent Practice:

  • For the independent practice, have students create a visual representation of the 5Es of adaptation for a specific animal.
  • They can use markers, pencils, or construction paper to create a poster, power point, or -presentation to illustrate the 5Es of adaptation for a specific animal.
  • Encourage them to be creative and include examples of adaptation they have learned about in class or from research.

Closure

  • Have students share their visual representations of the 5Es of adaptation for a specific animal.
  • Review the 5Es with the class and ask students to give examples of each.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and give feedback on their 5Es and example.
  • Collect the visual representations and use them to assess understanding of the 5Es and the specific animal.
