Adaptation And Survival Lesson Plan for 4th Grade Example Students

Topic: adaptation and survival

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the concept of adaptation and how animals can adapt to different environments to survive.
  • Students will be able to identify examples of adaptation in desert lizards, camels, rodents and reptiles, penguins, polar bears and brown bears, fennec foxes, lizards and arctic foxes.

Materials

  • Pictures or videos of desert lizards, camels, rodents and reptiles, penguins, polar bears and brown bears, fennec foxes, lizards and arctic foxes
  • Handouts with examples of adaptation for each animal (e.g. the arctic fox has fur-covered feet to keep it warm in the winter and paws with thick fur pads to provide traction on slippery ice)
  • Pencils and paper for student activity

Warm-Up

  • Have students think of a animal they are familiar with and list three ways that animal might survive in its environment.
  • Then, have them share their ideas with a partner.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of adaptation and survival.
  • Have students watch the video or read the article on the desert lizard and discuss how this animal has adapted to its environment to survive.
  • Discuss the reasons behind the adaptations, such as needing to survive and reproduce.
  • Show the pictures of the camel, rodents, and reptiles and discuss how they have adapted to their environments.
  • Have students work with a partner to come up with three ways each animal might survive in its environment.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work with a partner to research and discuss one additional animal that has adapted to its environment for survival (e.g. penguins, polar bear, brown bear).
  • Have students present their findings to the class and discuss the adaptations and reasons behind them.
  • Have students draw a diagram or create a graphic showing the adaptations of the animal they researched.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one animal that has adapted to its environment for survival to research in depth.
  • Have students create a presentation (e.g. poster, 3D model, video) that explains the animal's adaptations for survival, and how they help the animal to survive and reproduce.
  • Encourage students to be creative and use their skills to communicate their learning.

Closure

  • Review the key points of the lesson and remind students of the importance of adaptations for survival.
  • Ask students to reflect on their own adaptations for survival and how they help them to survive and reproduce.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice to assess their understanding of adaptations for survival.
  • Collect and review the class books or presentations to assess student understanding of the specific adaptations and the reasons they provide for survival.
  • Administer a quiz to assess student understanding of the key points of the lesson.
