Topic: I'm a Muslim

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand what does it means of being a muslim.

Materials

• Pictures of different Muslims (e.g. a doctor, a teacher, a police officer etc.)
• Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they know what does it mean of being a Muslim.
• Ask for volunteers to share their understanding of being a Muslim.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that being a Muslim means that you follow the teachings of the prophet Muhammad and the Quran, the holy book of Islam.
• Distribute the handouts with the definitions and examples of the Five Pillars of Islam.
• Go over each pillar and discuss what it means and how it is practiced.
• Emphasize the importance of each pillar for the unity and well-being of the Muslim community.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs or small groups to research and present on one of the pillars of Islam.
• Have each group present their pillar to the class and facilitate a discussion about its meaning and how it is practiced.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one of the pillars of Islam to research on their own.
• Encourage them to use multiple resources (e.g. books, internet, -Have them write a paragraph about what they learned and share it with the class.

Closure

• Discuss the importance of each pillar of Islam and how they intertwine with one another.
• Remind students that it is their responsibility to practice their faith and to uphold the pillars.
• Ask students to think about ways they can practice their faith outside of attending mosque, such as praying and reading the Quran at home.

Assessment

• Observe students during the role play and small group discussions to assess their understanding of the five pillars of Islam.
• Evaluate students' written reflections on the significance of each pillar and their ability to explain the intertwining of the pillars.
• Administer a quiz at a later date to assess students' retention of the information covered in the lesson.
