Topic: flag football

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to demonstrate the rules and basic strategies of flag football.

Materials

  • A football
  • A flag belt or flag shorts
  • A large open space for practice
  • Positive attitude

Warm-up

  • Have students stretch and do some light jogging to get their bodies ready for activity.
  • Ask students to explain what football is and what the different positions are (quarterback, running back, receiver, etc.).

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of flag football and explain that it is a simplified version of regular football that is played without tackling.
  • Explain the rules of flag football, including how to score and how to advance the ball.
  • Demonstrate how to properly hold and throw the football, and how to catch it without dropping it.

Guided Practice

  • Have students stand in a line and have them practice holding, throwing, and catching the football while a coach or teacher provides feedback.
  • As students become more comfortable with the basics of flag football, add in advanced techniques such as weaving around other players and running routes.

Independent Practice

  • Have students organize into teams and play a game of flag football. Encourage them to use the skills they have practiced to try to score as many touchdowns as possible.

Closure

  • Have students share their favorite parts of the game and their strategies for successfully catching the flag.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the game to assess their understanding of the rules and their ability to successfully catch the flag. -Use the closure activity as a form of assessment to determine students' understanding of the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship in flag football.
